A resident species that prefers rich undergrowth, though is not particularly shy. The red eye-ring and black head and cheek of the male is unmistakeable, but the female and juvenile can be much more cryptic. The female has a grey head, light brown back, white chin and the red-eye ring, but the juvenile lacks the latter so can be very difficult to positively id.
A rather harsh continuous chattering is the alarm call, and this is what one will normally hear well before seeing the bird, but if one stops at the first sound of it and stays still it is very useful for bringing in other small passerines who come to see what the danger is and once there are several birds in attendance the Sardinian Warbler will frequently then approach very close.
A particularly easy place to come across this species is the low coastal scrub near Faro airport.
