Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) Maçarico-galego

Whimbrels are an over-wintering and passage migrant and are a great deal commoner than their larger cousin the Curlew. They have a much darker and shorter bill than Curlews and also a pale supercilium and a prominent pale median crown stripe both of which the Curlew lacks. They breed in the taiga and can often be seen during April in large flocks feeding up at places like Salgados, the Alvor Estuary, Ludo Farm or the Lagoa Sto. André before pressing on further north.
