Sanderlings are known for their rapid "following and fleeing" of waves on the beach, but one is just as likely to find them on mud flats as anywhere else and sometimes they can be found well inland on the shores of lakes as well. They're an over-wintering and passage migrant species common enough between September and May, but their plumage differences, especially in April and May, can make them a difficult species to id successfully.
