Ruff (Philomachus pugnax) Combatente

There are a few over-wintering individuals but the majority of Ruff that we see in Portugal are migrants on passage and at the time of year they pass they do not show their famous breeding plumage, being instead rather plain brown waders of a size between a Common Redshank and a Black-winged Stilt. The feathers along their back quite often blow up in any small breeze.
