(Northern) Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) Abibe-comum

An unmistakeable bird even in flight where it flops and flutters with an irregular wing beat and an erratic though controlled pattern both singly and in flocks. On the ground Northern Lapwings are even more obvious with an obvious crest and a dark green sheen to their wings, black collar and white belly. Nominally an over-wintering species in Portugal there are always some individuals that stay the whole year through, so they can be seen at any time really. In winter there are huge flocks on the Plains mixed with Golden Plovers and their calls are heard from morn till night.
