(European) Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria) Tarambola-dourada

Golden Plovers over-winter throughout Portugal and can be found in huge numbers on the Plains of the Alentejo blending into the background perfectly with their wonderful camouflage. Breeding plumage is sometimes seen this far south, especially during the first months of the year and is strikingly similar to Grey Plover, but there is a brown tinge to the back and upper surface of the wings which is missing in the latter and the axillaries are always white.
