A species that is normally only ever seen in Portugal on migration, Curlew Sandpipers are sometimes found in mixed flocks of shorebirds and small waders, especially Dunlin, and with the latter it can be distinguished due to its slightly larger size, longer and more curved beak and longer neck. Late migrators can also be mistaken for Knot, but the belly at this time of year is red as opposed to orange and of course the beak is a completely different shape and size.
