Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) Narceja-comum

Snipe over-winter in Portugal either on the coast or inland normally in the southern half of the country. They are easily overlooked and can be difficult to see even when extremely close due to their superb camouflage. Normally they tend to stick to the edges of reed-fringed water, but on occasion will surprise one by feeding in broad daylight right out in the open in damp fields and marshy areas.
