Common Pochard (Aythea ferina) Zarro-comum

The male's dark red head, red eye, black "shoulder-wrap" and grey/blue and black bill are obvious, in stark contrast to the female which is the Garden Warbler of the duck world with very few distinguishing marks apart from an overall dull brownish plumage. Common Pochards are resident at several sites in southern Portugal, though only an over-wintering species throughout the majority of the country.
