Black Tern (Chlidonias niger) Gaivina-preta

One of our smallest Terns that on occasion breeds in the country but is also seen on passage. In breeding plumage the Black Tern's dark belly makes it unmistakeable, but its feeding pattern too is unlike other Terns as it flaps, harrier-like, across the tops of the waves occasionally swooping down to pick insects off the top of the water.
