Like its larger cousin the Pomarine Skua, the Arctic Skua has two adult morphs, one dark and one light, and a long tail projection, though in this specie's case the longer feather appears pointed rather than spoon-shaped. Although there is yellow on the cheeks, this is a faint smudge rather than the bright shade found on the Pomarine.
It is an over-wintering species along the south coasts but is more likely to be seen on passage from Africa.
