Somewhat similar to a Moorhen, with which it can be mistaken at a distance. However it is a great deal larger, lacks the diagonal white flank-line, has a great deal heavier bill and is dark blue as opposed to black-blue. Although it is nowhere common in Portugal Western Swamphens are easily seen along the southern coast and on the west coast up to and including the Tagus estuary.
Its feet are massive and it uses them not only to clamber amongst the reeds but also to hold the latter while it rips open and eats the base. Chicks are black and fluffy, hatching at the end of April.
