(Greater) Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) Flamingo-comum

The Greater Flamingo is another species that is expanding and can be found without too much effort nowadays throughout southern Portugal.

There have been attempts at breeding but it was only in 2022 that this was successfully acheived for the first time in living memory within Portugal.

Personally they are not my favourite species, though from a photographer's point of view they are iconic, especially in the late afternoon sun. However their quarrelsome croaking behaviour reminds me too much of drunken nightclub poseurs and I find them ugly too. However, most people don't and I must admit that their paddling to stir up the mud with their feet amuses me.
