A truly beautiful species and one that can sometimes be found on inland lakes with shallows. Migratory and nesting colonially, Black-crowned Night Herons are stealthy, moving seldom and slowly so can be easily missed, though the black crown and red eye are unmistakeable once spotted. They arrive in March and stay till September, nesting usually in tall trees though records exist of reed-bed nesting as well.
