Black-headed Weaver (Ploceus melanocephalus)

Black-headed Weavers have been breeding in the Algarve since the turn of the century and are now well established anywhere there are coastal lagoons with reeds, but principally around Faro.

Males are bright yellow with a black head  and dark eye. (I include a picture while females are more circumspect but with a dusting of yellow on the wings and cheek and a diagnostic white sclera and dark iris.

The nests are round, slightly larger than a tennis ball and woven into the reads at a height of about one and a half mts.
