Rock Bunting (Emberiza cia) Cia

This is a species that is resident in the south and north of the country but surprisingly only a winter visitor to the central Tagus Valley. Preferring high rocky areas this is not so difficult to understand, though why Rock Buntings buck the trend of retreating to lower altitudes for the colder months of the year is a mystery to me.

The sexes are very similar with a slightly plainer female and they are often seen in pairs or loose groups. Has polygamous breeding habits with males breeding with two or three females each.
