Ring Ouzel (Turdus torquatus) Melro-de-peito-branco

Ring Ouzels are an over-wintering species in Portugal, though most of my reference books state that this is not meant to be so; this is I feel more a question of lack of records than a record of the lack of birds as they are present every winter, arriving in our area in November and staying till March, during which time they feed primarily on the hawthorn berries, both on the high hills around Foia and also lower down on the coast to the west.

Unmistakeable even in their duller winter plumage, their white chest shield and scaly feathers being distinguishable even in dull winter light.
