Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica) Pisco-de-peito-azul

Bluethroats are a species best seen during migration where they prefer reed-fringed coastal lakes, drainage ditches, streams and saline or brackish pools with thick undergrowth. Apart from the obvious blue throat of the male, all plumage variations have a prominent white supercilium and rusty-red tail base, and, though shy, will perch in the open from time to time without apparent stress. The best time to see them is during the last two weeks of September and the first two of October when they are locally abundant in certain locations as they feed up before most move on further south. Having said that, there're a fair number that over-winter along the south-western coast, so one is liable to encounter them anytime between late September until the end of February on any coastal marsh in the Algarve.
