(European) Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur)

The Turtle Dove is a summer visitor, arriving in April and leaving September. Sadly there has been a continuous decline in this species and now it is increasingly difficult to find this iconic and shy bird. Its lazy "turr-turr-turr" call is the sound of warm sunny days and with its red eye, beautiful brown wings, striped neck-patch and pink chest is is a species that brightens any day. It prefers agricultural land with scattered woods and copses among and between which it feeds on the ground. It is shy and will not allow close scrutiny - not without reason as it is still mercilessly hunted throughout the majority of its range, especially in Morocco.
