Corn Bunting (Emberiza calandra) Trigueirão

Corn Buntings are a resident species preferring open meadows, and though primarily a seed eater, their chicks need insects in the first few weeks of life so any increased use of pesticides is detrimental.

During the warmer months of the year one is seldom out of earshot of these LBJs if grass is anywhere within view, and they often fly with their obviously red legs hanging down. Sings in the open and can be approached to almost touching distance if one is in a car.

In northern Europe farming practices have effectively denuded them from the countryside, but with a less intensive attitude in the south they are still flourishing.
