Booted Eagle (Aquila pennata) Águia-calçada

Of the two morphs we have here, the light is by far the most common and dark morphs can throw one when id-ing a far away bird. There is a picture below of the two morphs together, but this species can throw up some surprises like the extremely light variant of the dark phase morph whose picture is also below.

Booted Eagles are surprisingly small for such an aggressive Eagle, with a wingspan similar to that of a Common Buzzard. Although migratory there are always a few individuals that over-winter in Portugal. When stooping for prey or displaying for a mate, folds wings and fairly motors!
